Independent Practice 2

Independent practice 2

My aim was to independently research my own area of particular interest, and to structure projects with a clear vision of function and purpose.

I have chosen to research 3 particular areas which are:

•             Portfolio

•             Degree show

•             Feature

I chose to design and produce an online portfolio for my degree show. I decided to use moonfruit.com as my platform. My portfolio must have a suitable interface design and look and feel for the chosen content. The portfolio should demonstrate clear application on website principles this should touch on information architecture and usability conventions. Using basic navigation and layout techniques.

The portfolio will help me to explore, experiment and innovate, building on my experience, and understanding of interactive media, and giving my work identity through choice of content, subject matter, form and medium.

I looked at 4 different platforms before I decided to use moonfruit.com.

  • Yola
  • WordPress
  • Weebly
  • Wix

The first platform I looked at was Yola. Yola.com is a site that makes websites. You can pay for a domain or simply just get a free subdomain. I did some research: “Yola was born in South Africa in 2007.There are over six million Yola users. The Sitebuilder is available in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. All of which they speak their selves, plus a few others. And it’s free.”I tried using Yola for at least 2 weeks but it was too complicated to use and the editing was like impossible. So I decided not to use it. https://www.yola.com/about-us

Then I looked at WordPress templates and I liked some of them, but I wanted a website not a blog so I decided not to use it.  I did some research on WordPress and I found out that WordPress started in 2003. At first it only started with a single bit of code to enhance the typography of everyday writing and with fewer users. “Since then it has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day. “http://wordpress.org/about/

Weebly- It’s one of the best free online tools I’ve seen for website and blog creation. It allows you to pick a design, then drag and drop elements onto each page you create. You can easily add text, pictures, links, contact forms, Flickr galleries, files, Google maps, feed readers, YouTube videos, and Google videos. You can also add your own custom HTML. But it does take some time to learn how to use it and get used to it. http://www.squidoo.com/weebly

I like Wix, but it is a bit slow and it does take some time to load. I learned how to use Wix in my first year but now it’s been updated and the new version is a bit different. So I changed my mind and decided to find something else. Another problem I was having was I wanted a simple portfolio nothing too flashy, and Wix is an online Flash development website that uses a drag and drop interface to allow people without any knowledge of Flash, to quickly and easily create a websites. http://webtrends.about.com/od/profile1/fr/what-is-wix.htm

I decided to use moonfruit as my platform for my portfolio.  Finally I found the one which was easy to use and the templates were good and it’s not to expensive to buy either.  http://www.moonfruit.com/about

http://www.anilakhan.moonfruit.com/

i bought a domain name :

www.anilakhan.co.uk

I chose this template because it shows my images I’ve been working on. I like the fonts and the colours. I didn’t want anything to flashy so this was the perfect template for me. I wanted it to look simple as possible. The colours used were dark and light grey. I have my name and my course name on the left hand side at the top. Underneath the name, I have some images so people can have a look at my work before they click on the work page. I have the home button on the left hand side.  I am also thinking to have a gallery page or a slideshow to show all my images underneath the Work page.

Statement of intention

Purpose:

My purpose is to design a portfolio. I will use moonfruit.com as my platform. This website must have a suitable interface design and look and feel for the chosen content.

Objectives:

SMART Targets (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely)

■            Specific:

Design my portfolio May (2012)

■           Measurable:

Start: with researching other websites

■Planning: design my own portfolio.

■Finish: Design my portfolio on moonfruit.com

■            Agreed:

My teacher has to agree on the tasks objectives raised before I start the website to make sure everything is clear so the tasks could be performed and meet its aims (The task would be on the work breakdown structure section)

■            Realistic:

What is my budget: there is an undefined budget so I can use the best facilities to design my portfolio

When will the portfolio be complete by: deadline 1st June (2012)

■            Timely:

For this project I have been given time scale for about 10 weeks and from those 10 weeks there are 10 working days, where there is 1 working day with 8 hours per day with a total of 80 hours.

Constraints

I started with drawing my business cards-

Then I tried free Vista Print cards- I liked one of the free templates but when I started editing it started charging me like £20 one sided-  disappointing

i liked MOO mini cards and they do like double sided for about £28. This is the template I chose.

Final individual outcome:

We were also told, we suppose to make cards as a group representing hull school of art and design as well. The colours are going to be different but everyone is going to have the same cards, for example interactive media purple cards, web design orange etc.

Show reel Planning-

  1. Quality of content
  2. Audience- students
  3. Length- 2- 3 min
  4. Music
  5. Impact
  6. Scripts- interviews
  7. background – first idea white, final colour- blue background,
  8. Design- Front/Back cover
  9. Editing
  10. Directing

different ideas

Our first idea was to design the showreel on final cut express. but because of problems like:

  • lack of content  on basecamp
  •  unable to download students video content from youtube onto desktop to then cut in final cut
  • could not get images to fit full screen without distortion
  • PT SANS caption bold is not available on final cut for titles

alternative ideas-

one single DVD with back to back videos of everybody work; no sound but would play continously for about an hour

OR

To design the showreel on powerpoint just like a slide-show with sound, which would play continously not longer then about 10 minute.

Decision made i am going to design the showreel on powerpoint and use the screen-shots and the bios which was put on basecamp for the website.

problems : i was given some videos which were different formats which would not work on a PC or MAC. And one of the game students helped me to convert the videos to something suitable. However then another problem came about and the file would upload but  it won’t play.

I had another problem,  the brief required a proper video so the powerpoint idea was cancelled; and one of the games students took over to help out . I gathered all the content and sent it over.

Features:

The idea was to write a double page feature about Norway.

Evaluation

In this evaluation I want to evaluate that my aim was to independently research my own area of particular interest, and to structure projects with a clear vision of function and purpose.

I have chosen to research 3 particular areas which are:

•             Portfolio

•             Degree show

•             Feature

What I have learned throughout this time were; that it isn’t easy to chose the right platform. You have to work very hard, carry out successful planning and do loads of research to figure out which one to use. I went through; Yola, Wordpres  Weebly, Wix, Moonfruit because I wanted to use the best software.

The techniques I used throughout this project were: keep my portfolio as simple as possible. The second technique was to get my navigation perfect and useable.

To get my audience attracted to my portfolio is by keeping it simple because cutting out the overloaded adverts and clutter on a website can make the primary message easily understood by the consumers.

The reason why I chose to have 4 navigation bars was because I wanted to make my portfolio simple and professional.

I chose to have a Home page to welcome my audience. I chose to have an about me page so business owners or companies who are looking for employers can find out who I am before they look at my work. I have done quiet a lot of work past these 3 years so I had to sit down and make a list; to pick the best work for my portfolio. And at last I added a contact page. The reason why I wanted a contact page was because if anybody who wanted my details could just click on contact page and find my details.

I also wanted a slide show or a gallery however that never happened because on moonfruit my quota has exceeded which means I can’t upload any more images. i then deleted some images and kept what i needed. Another problem was I wanted to buy my domain name on moonfruit but it was very complicated and expensive so I decided to use 123.reg.co.uk instead.

Another problem i faced was the home page is just like a blog. The social network sign, comment box and dates won’t turn off. I can buy blog beta so the admin can turn off comments globally in the blog setting section which will cost me stupid amount of money.  I have tried to trash comment box etc. but it is unable to delete; then I went on the settings again and tried trashing everything together and hide the blog post. Which looks ok , I just added an image over it.

Evaluation for the degree show will be handed in:  6th of June – group and individual appraisal documentation, 1000 words each.

For my feature

I did not get the time to start writing my article. However I’ve chosen my layout and done my research. If I wrote the article the skills that I would use would be writing short and simple. There is no need to write extensive article to confuse people. Successful articles generally are about 300 words so I would follow that rule. When I will write my articles I am going to write them in clear simple language so that everybody understands.

My project has been done successfully. The reason why it has been successful is because I worked as an individual and did sufficient planning and loads of research to get this portfolio and feature together.

My personal progress was I became confident and I had planned sufficiently for my work to enable me to achieve my goals.  I became positive and I knew how to improve my performance in most circumstances.

I would say my strength would be working as an individual because then you got everything in control and you have fewer problems.

I would say doing independent research would be my strength because I like visiting different places and finding new information. My progress was I went to the library to get some books for research which was very useful and important.

To get a better grade my work needs to be accurately deployed. My work needs excellent grasp of theoretical conceptual elements.  My work needs to have good integration of theory and information in pursuit of the assessed work objectives.
